Description:	Synechococcus elongatus PCC 6301 is a freshwater unicellular obligate photoautotrophic cyanobacterium formerly known as Anacystis nidulans. It was isolated in about 1952 and was the first accession of the Pasteur Culture Collection. It has a total of 37 genes for two component signal transduction systems, which is the smallest number known (as of November 2006) for freshwater cyanobacteria. Gene organization and sequence are nearly identical to another freshwater cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 (SYNP7) except for a large inversion of 187 kb. The endpoints of this inversion are found in genes that may encode outer membrane porins, and thus the two proteins in question are polymorphic with respect to one another. These differences may explain the fact that SYNP7 is naturally competent for transformation while SYNP6 is not.
