| Description: | Gram-negative nonmotile and facultatively anaerobic bacterium. It is a member of the normal florae of the upper respiratory tract of a number of animals. It is a frequent cause of opportunistic infections on the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory and digestive tracts of mammals and birds. Causes hemorrhagic septicemia of cattle, fowl cholera and pneumonia in farm animals. P.multocida is often endemic in rabbit colonies causing upper respiratory disease. It is usually acquired by humans from the bite or scratch of a dog or cat. Infection develops at the site of the wound and can spread via the lymphatics or hematogenously to a number of other organs. The organism is unusually sensitive to penicillin. |
