HAMAP: Synechococcus sp. (strain WH8102) complete proteome

General information

Species:  Synechococcus sp. (strain WH8102)
Species code: SYNPX
Taxonomy: Bacteria; Cyanobacteria; Chroococcales; Synechococcus (TaxID: 84588) [NEWT/ NCBI]
Description: Synechococcus sp. (strain WH8102) is a marine cyanobacterium, isolated from the Sargasso Sea in March 1981. As an organism living in open seawater it has extensive capabilities to take up phosphate and urea. It has been shown to be able to take up amino acids, oligopeptides and phosphonates and encodes transporters for many other compounds and trace elements. Its motility apparatus is unusual, in that none of the motor or flagellar proteins associated with other types of prokaryotic motility have been found except for six ORFs associated with type IV-pilus-dependent motility. This form of motility is found in some other cyanobacteria, and requires among other regions the swmB protein, which encodes for a nearly 11,000 amino acid protein. The cell envelope is unusual and probably includes glycosylated and sialated proteins as these enzymes have been found in its genome. Its evolutionary past seems to have been highly influenced by horizontal gene transfer, although it no longer seems to have any active prophages or plasmids.
