| HAMAP: Staphylococcus aureus (strain bovine RF122 / ET3-1) complete proteome |
| Species code: | STAAB |
| Taxonomy: | Bacteria; Firmicutes; Bacillales; Staphylococcus (TaxID: 273036) [NEWT/ NCBI] |
| Description: | Gram-positive nonmotile coccus that grows in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, in which it forms grape-like clusters. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the major causes of community- acquired and hospital-acquired infections. It produces numerous toxins including superantigens that cause unique disease entities such as toxic-shock syndrome and staphylococcal scarlet fever. S.aureus is also the cause of bovine mastitis which causes billions of dollars in economic loss to the dairy industry. Strain ET3-1, also known as RF122, is an isolate that represents the most common S.aureus clone derived from bovine mastitis worldwide. It was isolated from a cow with mastitis in 1993 in Ireland, and belongs to the ST151 MLST type. The genome sequence has revealed genomic features that distinguish successful bovine from human pathogens. |
