| HAMAP: Shewanella sp. (strain MR-7) complete proteome |
| Species code: | SHESR |
| Taxonomy: | Bacteria; Proteobacteria; Gammaproteobacteria; Alteromonadales; Shewanellaceae; Shewanella (TaxID: 60481) [NEWT/ NCBI] |
| Description: | Shewanella are facultatively anaerobic, Gram-negative bacteria, motile by polar flagella, rod-like, and generally associated with aquatic or marine environments. . They are capable of using a variety of compounds as electron acceptors, including oxygen, iron, manganese, uranium, nitrate, nitrite, fumarate, to name but a few. This ability makes Shewanella important for bioremediation of contaminated metals and radioactive wastes. The genus Shewanella comprises 36 recognized and hundreds of uncharacterized cultivable species. Shewanella sp. MR-4 and MR-7 are two isolates that were obtained from different depths of the Black Sea representing the oxic (5 m depth) and anoxic (60 m) zones of the water column. A comparative analysis will offer novel insights into the genetic basis of this intriguing physiological difference and the environmental stimuli that control it. Strains MR-4 and MR-7 will provide additional genomic information on the other phylogenetic branch of the S. baltica species. |
