Description:	Gram-negative meningococcal bacterium. Neisseria meningitidis colonizes the mucosal surface of the human nose and throat, usually as a commensal bacterium. Up to 15% of the human population are asymptomatic carriers. Sometimes the strains can invade the host, causing life-threatening invasive bacterial infections especially in young infants. They do so by gaining access to the blood and to the cerebrospinal fluid to cause meningitis and septicemia. Thus it is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Strains from serogroup A are responsible for major epidemics and pandemics of meningococcal disease.
