| HAMAP: Microcystis aeruginosa (strain NIES-843) complete proteome |
| Species code: | MICAN |
| Taxonomy: | Bacteria; Cyanobacteria; Chroococcales; Microcystis (TaxID: 449447) [NEWT/ NCBI] |
| Description: | Microcystis is a gas-vacuolated, bloom-forming cyanobacteria which is distributed from cold to tropical climates. They are coccoid, form aggregates and have an amorphous mucilage sheath. They produce various toxins which cause death in their fresh-water habitats and to other animals in those food chains. While they have been divided into 5 morphospecies, this division has been questioned and they have been recently reunited with this strain, M.aeruginosa strain NIES-843 as the type strain. NIES-843 produces (by non-ribosomal peptide synthesis, NRPS) microcystin, a hepatotoxin, cyanopeptolin, a chymotrypsin inhibitor and encodes novel NRPS gene clusters as well, although no other peptides have been reported to be produced by this strain. Almost 12% of the genome is composed of insertion sequences and small transposable elements. |
