| Description: |
Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 is a Gram-negative, magnetotactic, facultative anaerobic bacterium. Respiratory nitrate reduction allows the oxidation of a substrate under anaerobic conditions. The terminal electron acceptor may be Fe(III) via membrane-bound ferric reductase. Like other magnetotactic bacteria, Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 was found to form internal crystals of magnetite (Fe3O4) that are surrounded by a membrane (magnetosome). The uniform size and distribution of the crystals indicates extreme biological control of the mineralization process. The bacterium uses the iron mineral as a magnet to orient itself and exhibits magnetotaxis to follow magnetic field lines downward towards regions of favourable growth. Usually found near the oxic-anoxic transition zone, which is usually located at the sediment-water interface in freshwater environments or displaced upward into the water column in marine semi-anaerobic environments. |
