| Description: | Legionella pneumophila is the causative agent of the Legionnaires' disease, a potential fatal pneumonia. It was isolated after an outbreak of pneumonia at an American legion convention in Philadelphia. The strain Philadelphia 1 is derived from the original 1976 isolate. Legionella pneumophila is found in biofilms and fresh and industrial water systems worldwide. It can survive and replicate intracellularly in free-living protozoa, often in aquatic biofilms. |
