Description: Geobacter uraniireducens is a Gram-negative, microaerophilic rod that belongs to the delta subdivision of the Proteobacteria. Strain Rf4 was isolated from an in-situ uranium bioremediation study site in Rifle, Colorado. It has the ability to reduce uranium and iron using acetate and other organic acids as the electron donor, therefore promoting the reduction of uranium concentrations in contaminated sites. Unlike previously described Geobacter species, G. uraniireducens exhibits much slower growth rates and has 2-4 unusually long flagella (up to 16 micrometers).
