  • In the presence of single-stranded DNA, the recA protein interacts with lexA causing an autocatalytic cleavage which disrupts the DNA- binding part of lexA, leading to derepression of the SOS regulon and eventually DNA repair.
  • The activity was previously attributed to the recA protein (formerly EC 3.4.99.37).
  • Belongs to peptidase family S24.
