  • This enzyme catalyzes the insertion of both atoms of molecular oxygen into positions 2 and 3 of the phenyl ring of 3-phenylpropanoate.
  • The product, 3-(cis-5,6-dihydroxycyclohexa-1,3-dien-1-yl)propanoate, is then converted into 3-(2,3-dihydroxyphenyl)propanoate, by a dehydrogenase, with the concomitant regeneration of NADH.
  • The enzyme also acts on (2E)-3-phenylprop-2-enoate (cinnamate).
