ENZYME

ENZYME entry: EC 2.4.1.140

Accepted Name
alternansucrase
Alternative Name(s)
sucrose:1,6-, 1,3-alpha-D-glucan 3-alpha- and 6-alpha-D- glucosyltransferase
sucrose-1,6(3)-alpha-glucan 6(3)-alpha-glucosyltransferase
Reaction catalysed
Transfers alternately an alpha-D-glucosyl residue from sucrose to the 6-position and the 3-position of the non-reducing terminal residue of an alpha-D-glucan, thus producing a glucan having alternating alpha-(1->6)-and alpha-(1->3)-linkages
Comment(s)
  • The glucansucrases transfer a D-glusosyl residue from sucrose to a glucan chain.
  • They are classified based on the linkage by which they attach the transferred residue.
  • In some cases, in which the enzyme forms more than one linkage type, classification relies on the relative proportion of the linkages that are generated.
  • This enzyme forms both alpha(1->3) and alpha(1->6) linkages in approximately equal amounts by alternating the linkage type. cf. EC 2.4.1.125.
