ENZYME

ENZYME entry: EC 1.5.7.1

Accepted Name
methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (ferredoxin)
Alternative Name(s)
5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase
Reaction catalysed
(6S)-5-methyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolate + 2 oxidized [2Fe-2S]-[ferredoxin] <=> (6R)-5,10-methylene-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolate + 2 H(+) + 2 reduced [2Fe-2S]-[ferredoxin]
Comment(s)
  • The enzyme from Clostridium formicoaceticum catalyzes the reduction of methylene blue, menadione, benzyl viologen, rubredoxin or FAD with 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and the oxidation of reduced ferredoxin or FADH2 with 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate.
  • However, unlike EC 1.5.1.20, EC 1.5.1.53, or EC 1.5.1.24, there is no activity with either NADH or NADP(+).
